Barbie Storage Tutorial

At times I get really overwhelmed when toys are all over the place. I have a 2 and 6 year and I know it is inevitable for a tornado of a mess to happen 5 minutes after I picked up the whole house ha! I try to teach the girls designated areas that are for specific toys like here and here. And it does seem to help. Well their tiny best friends that they love to play with were crying for a space of their own and that's when this little cutie was born...

 

 

 

These are the materials used:

• 1 solid back cotton lining 18"x24"
• 1 solid front lining 18"x24" (I used felt because that's what I had on hand and it was semi sturdy so I wouldn't have to use interfacing)
• 2 printed cotton for pockets 20"x18"
• pants hanger
• small strip of hook&loop or velcro
• sewing machine
• pins

I wanted it to resemble a shoe organizer, but I wanted to use cute fabrics.

I had bought this fabric last spring from IKEA and it was just collecting dust and I thought this was the perfect project. I thought the print looked very 60s. I also thrifted the vintage wooden pant hanger for .75 cents and thought it would work perfectly!

 

Here's a general idea how I put this together.

 

 *don't mind that middle crease/line that's where I sewed 2 strips together to made one large piece

**I forgot to photograph this step: after pinning and sewing down pockets mark off  6" twice then sew a straight line down. These create the pockets!

 

 

It took about a hour including the ironing, pinning, and sewing which wasn't too bad.

Then it was time to put those girls in their new home!

 

 

Nice and simple. My kinda project.

It would make a nice gift too. And maybe a few homemade Barbie dresses like these would be cute too!

Cheap DIY Art Carousel

I seem to be having the biggest problem with my dog lately. When I go outside to pick up his naughty poops I find heaps of crayon bits in them! Sorry TMI I know! Its just so freakin frustrating to finally find out where all the crayons are disappearing to! So I figured if I made a designated area for all daily art supplies then my gross curious little dog won't easily find his favorite colored, waxy snack.

 

Thats when this little helper came in the picture:
 

 

This was a total last minute project. Which means I didn't go out and buy anything. I had the plastic lazy susan ( that I got for a $1 at Honks) in my craft room and I wasn't really using it. Mod Podged some vintage fabric that I thrifted to it.

 

The aluminum cans were old peanut cans that I was saving for I don't know what reason! Sheeesh once you become a crafter it ultimately means you are a hoarder too! Anywhoo I just modpodged some leftover scrapbooking paper to those two.

 

The yellow, plastic vintage mugs I thrifted for my girls to play with in their kitchen. They have so much play pots and dishes I figures I could use em:)

 

Pretty easy and fits all there little art supplies.

 

 

Once I set it out they were excited to get started:)

 

 

Fits nice and perfect on this little shelf that I rescued and painted. Can you believe this shelf used to be one of those cheesy, black laminated shelves?

 

 

Take that Toby! No more crayons for you!;o)

Frugal Closet Makeover

There always seems to be a point when you look around and say,"Something has to change." Well that moment happened this morning as I was about to change my dolls for the day. When things are untidy or crazy it just makes things that much more frustrating.

This was the madness:

 

So a few plastic bins from dollar store, free printable labels, and going through clothes they don't wear anymore..this was my result:

For a little decor I displayed a silk jacket my dad bought me when I was little while he was stationed in Japan and I hung some paper doilies I bought in the dollar section at Michael's.

I just used some twine and looped them through the holes of the plastic bins.

My little doll was admiring her new organized closet.

Yes she threw on about 4 tutus as she was playing dressing up:)

On the bottom I put a vintage 60s hamper for their stinkies, a little box for their shoes (from Ikea), and stored all their winter clothes in the large clear bin.

White plastic container and doilies came out to about $6 dollars. Not too shabby:)

Ah.....so much better!

Best Birthday Gift:)

gah! so in love. kinda reminds me of ruby red theater chairs or carpet.

I've been searching thrift stores galore for a vintage one but haven't really had any luck. And for the prices I've seen on etsy and ebay I though why not buy a new one?(I'm still going to search for my vintage one while thrifting though.)

My husband knew how much I had been wanting one so this was my gift. From my previous post  you know how much music means to me. I have a little growing vinyl collection already.

One of my favs at the moment is this record I found at an estate sale:

If you've seen this movie you know how amazing this woman's voice is!

For the moment I don't have a place for my little record player so I've converted my curbside organizer into a stand for it.

Its been working for the moment until I find a cute side table or something.

DIY Dress Up Rack

First let me just say I stumbled on one of the most amazing blogs Smile and Wave. I love her style, projects, and well everything! She had this tutorial for a garment rack made out of basic materials so I thought it looked easy enough to complete within a few hours and it was practical.

My dolls have been accumulating these cute tutu skirts that are their fav to play dress up in, but we would just stuff them in a box when they were done which was kind of an eyesore. I thought if they were neatly displayed and accessible at their level they were more likely to play with them and put them away..and guess what? I was right!

So according to Rachel from S&W these are all the materials you need:

• 4 - 1" x 3" x 6' poplar boards,
• 3 - 1/2" x 48" poplar dowel rods,
• drill with 1/2" and 1/8" bits, 2 - screw eye hooks,
• 2' of chain, wire cutters,
• pliers, hand saw (or miter saw),
• pencil, tape measure,
• protective eye wear,
• gloves,
• cardboard,
• 80 grade sand paper,
• primer and paint (optional).

I was naughty and didn't use protective gear and opted for zip ties instead of chain and screw eyes.

I suppose I'm lazy and impatient and wanted it done fast.

It was my first time using a drill all by myself..whoohoo! As this was my result:)

Fresh New Pantry

I've been meaning to post this for awhile now, but just haven't had the time to photograph it all. When my husband was still deployed once again I distracted myself with a little home project. I've been overloaded with pantry inspiration all over the web and thought it was time to do a little organizing myself. Being frugal and working around the fact that we are renting is always an issue when I attack any home project. I didn't have a before picture since we just moved into new base house with a clean slate.

I even added some organization and saved some space with my broom, mop, and grocery bags by hanging them inside the door. They are hung by Command hooks for easy removal when we move.

Something I must share is this personalized family shopping list and organizer I purchase here from IHeartOrganizing. Only $3 and I can print as many as I need. It saves me so much time at the grocery store and since it's right in the pantry I always jot down what we are low on.

Here's a breakdown of where I bought everything:

Yep due to my budget everything was either a $1-$3, but I had everything on hand already. Just a bit more organized now:)

If you're wondering about those labels I purchased them from Martha Stewart's line at Staples. I was going crazy over her chalkboard labels and they were crazy cheap for being so cuuute!







Last, but not least to give it that extra pop I added some cute wrapping paper that I picked up at Target to line the walls. I applied it with tape and push pins once again for easy removal when we move.

And that's it! If I had to estimate how much this total project cost I would say around $15. It sure makes me happy and makes life a bit easier knowing where everything is at!
